Dominican Republic News: Motorcycle Safety Crisis, Economic Growth, and New Airline Route
Dominican Republic Daily News: Motorcycle Accidents, Economic Outlook, and New Flight Route Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – June 5, 2025 – Today's news from the Dominican Republic covers a range of important topics. A concerning statistic reveals that 70% of traffic accidents involve motorcycles, leading to calls for increased safety measures. Intrant Director Milton Morrison stated, "400 of the 700 fatalities this year were motorcyclists without helmets or with inadequate protection." This has prompted a new law mandating the sale of motorcycles with at least one certified helmet. Meanwhile, the Consejo Nacional de la Empresa Privada (CONEP) expressed confidence in the nation's potential for growth, emphasizing its talent and resources. CONEP President Celso Juan Marranzini highlighted the need to address challenges such as quality education and inefficient public spending. He stated, "The country has the talent and resources, but it is urgent to tackle challenges like quality education and inefficient public spending." The private sector contributes significantly to the economy, generating 86% of employment, 85% of GDP, and 90% of investment. On a more positive note, the Dominican airline Arajet inaugurated its new route between the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico. The inaugural flight departed from Las Américas International Airport at 12:20 PM and landed 40 minutes later in San Juan, Puerto Rico. This new route will operate four times a week, connecting Santo Domingo with San Juan and, starting June 6th, Punta Cana as well.
