Forced Evictions as Accra Tackles Floods: Sakumo Ramsar Site Demolition
Accra's Flood Mitigation Efforts Displace Residents at Sakumo Ramsar Site. The Accra Regional Security Council (REGSEC) initiated a demolition of structures along waterways in the Sakumo Ramsar Site as part of a flood mitigation project. This has led to the displacement of numerous residents, many of whom are seen in the video hurriedly removing their belongings. One resident, Charles Kofi Buedu, who has lived in the area for three years, stated that during rainfall, the area floods significantly. "If the rain came, you know, the water reach here like that, it always hang over there." he said. The video highlights the challenges faced by residents as they struggle to relocate and the complexities of balancing development with environmental protection and community needs. The project's success will depend on effective relocation and support for those affected.
