Ghana Unveils Bold Plan for Sustainable Urban Growth
Ghana Launches National Strategy for Sustainable Cities Ghana's Ministry of Local Government, Chieftaincy, and Religious Affairs, in partnership with the World Bank, recently launched the Ghana Sustainable Cities Strategy (GSCS). This initiative aims to guide urban development towards inclusivity, resilience, and environmental sustainability. The strategy acknowledges the rapid urbanization Ghana is experiencing and seeks to address challenges such as inadequate infrastructure, housing shortages, and rising inequality. Sector Minister Ahmed Ibrahim stated, "This is not merely a strategic document but a national commitment and a blueprint outlining how we intend to reshape our urban landscape to meet the needs of today and prepare for the demands of tomorrow." The GSCS aligns with both continental and global development agendas, including the UN's Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 11, focused on sustainable cities and communities. The strategy provides a coherent framework for guiding urban development, mobilizing resources, and building institutional capacity to achieve sustainable and inclusive growth. The World Bank's involvement underscores the international significance of this initiative and its potential to serve as a model for other developing nations.
