16 Arrested in Ghana for BECE Malpractice: WAEC Intensifies Monitoring
BECE Malpractice Cases Rise in Ghana: WAEC Reports 16 Arrests Ghana has seen a concerning increase in examination malpractice during the recent BECE exams. The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) reported 16 arrests, a significant rise compared to previous years. The arrests include 12 invigilators, 1 supervisor, and 3 individuals not directly connected to the examination centers. This development highlights the challenges faced by WAEC in ensuring exam integrity. "This time around, we've hit sixteen so far," stated John Kapito, Head of Public Affairs at WAEC. He explained that many of those arrested were involved in taking pictures of exam papers and circulating answers among candidates. One individual, identifying as a fashion designer, was found with photocopied answers intended for distribution. WAEC is responding to this increase by expanding its monitoring efforts. They've engaged with regional directors of education, district directors, security agencies, and chiefs to address the issue. The collaboration aims to create a more robust system for preventing future malpractice. The council hopes that these measures will deter future misconduct and maintain the integrity of the BECE examinations.
