Moldova's Orchards Devastated: 8200 Hectares Lost to Spring Frosts
Moldovan Orchards Suffer Heavy Losses from April Frosts Unusually cold weather in April 2025 has devastated Moldova's fruit orchards, causing significant losses for farmers. According to Vasile Șarban, State Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, the two waves of frost affected approximately 8200 hectares of land. The damage assessment is ongoing, but initial reports indicate severe damage to cherry, sour cherry, walnut, apple, plum, peach, and apricot crops. "The most significant damage was seen in cherry, sour cherry, and walnut orchards," said Șarban in a recent interview. He added that while the assessment is ongoing, the damage is substantial. Despite calls from farmers for a state of emergency to be declared, Șarban stated that he doesn't believe this is currently necessary. He emphasized that the government is actively working to assess the damage and provide support to affected farmers. The situation highlights the vulnerability of Moldova's agricultural sector to extreme weather events. The government's response will be crucial in helping farmers recover from these significant losses and ensure future food security.
