Romanian Minister Calls for Metrorex Bonus Cuts Amidst Infrastructure Funding Crisis

Minister of Transport Appeals to Metrorex Staff to Relinquish Bonuses for Infrastructure Funding Bucharest, Romania – Ciprian Constantin Șerban, Romania's Minister of Transport and Infrastructure, issued a public appeal today to Metrorex employees currently working above ground within the Ministry building, urging them to consider renouncing what he termed "immoral metro bonuses." The minister emphasized the country's challenging economic situation and the critical need for funds to develop national infrastructure. "You have a choice between keeping your immoral bonuses or continuing investments in infrastructure," Șerban stated in his address. He detailed the government's obligations to build and improve roads, highways, railways, metro networks, and naval and air infrastructure, all of which require significant financial resources. To facilitate this, the minister proposed a practical solution for those unwilling to give up the bonus. "I can bring the CNIR (National Company for Road Infrastructure Administration) into the 9th-floor offices so they no longer have to pay 30,000 euros per month in rent for their current spaces," he explained. "And you, those who work above ground and receive this immoral bonus, can move underground where you will legitimately benefit from it." The announcement has sparked a mixed reaction among the public and employees. Online comments reflect a divided opinion, with some supporting the call for fiscal responsibility and others criticizing the perceived hypocrisy of government officials asking for cuts from lower-paid workers while their own benefits remain untouched. One commenter noted, "Some millionaire people are appealing to those earning 5000 lei to give up bonuses." Another questioned, "But what about the salaries and bonuses of those at the top, don't they remain untouched?!" The debate highlights broader concerns about economic fairness and government spending priorities.
