
Deepfake Detectors Fail: AI Technology Outpaces Security Measures
Deepfakes are becoming increasingly sophisticated, and current detection technology is struggling to keep up. CNN's Isabel Rosales recently interviewed Perry Carpenter, CEO of Knowbe4, a cybersecurity company. Carpenter demonstrated how easily he could create a deepfake of Rosales, using readily available online tools. When the deepfake was run through several detection programs, most reported it as authentic, highlighting a critical flaw in current technology. "Anyone that promises a one-click type of answer is wrong," Carpenter stated, emphasizing the need for more sophisticated and nuanced methods of verification. Rosales's deepfake, initially flagged as suspicious by only one of the detection models, was later deemed authentic after the addition of ambient sounds, further demonstrating the technology's limitations.
