Supermarket Scandal: ANPC President Exposes Price Gouging
Romanian Consumer Protection Authority President Exposes Supermarket Price Discrepancies In a recent video, Cristian Popescu Piedone, president of Romania's National Authority for Consumer Protection (ANPC), revealed several instances of price discrepancies in a Romanian supermarket. The video, filmed on May 28th, 2025, shows Piedone inspecting various products and using a barcode scanner to demonstrate the differences between advertised prices and the prices charged at the checkout. "I urge all of Romania to watch until the end!" Piedone stated in the video, highlighting the significance of his findings. He specifically pointed out inconsistencies for products like Transalpina frozen dessert and Johnnie Walker whisky, where the actual price was significantly higher than the advertised price. For example, the Johnnie Walker whisky showed a shelf price of 81.49 RON, but the scanner registered 82.49 RON. Similar discrepancies were noted for other items. The ANPC's actions underscore the importance of consumer protection and the need for transparency in pricing practices. This case serves as a reminder for consumers to carefully check prices before purchasing goods and to report any discrepancies to the relevant authorities.
