A recent executive order from the Trump administration, titled "Ending Crime and Disorder on America's Streets" and dated July 24, 2025, has sparked significant concern among disability advocates. According to commentator Imani Barbarin, known as CrutchesAndSpice, the order's primary goal is to create mechanisms for institutionalizing individuals without due process, specifically targeting those identified as mentally ill, queer, or visibly poor. Barbarin expressed profound frustration, stating that the disabled community has consistently warned about the weaponization of disability against vulnerable populations for years. "Disabled people have been telling you the weaponization of disability against you was coming, but you don't fucking listen," she asserted, highlighting past warnings she issued as early as August 2023 regarding disability law and the Olmstead Decision. She further argued that the public's perceived ignorance or indifference to these warnings is a result of able-bodied individuals believing they are separate from such issues. Barbarin also criticized the narrative that such policies are mere "fumbles" by the government or media, instead framing them as deliberate "investments" by billionaires. She pointed to private equity firms buying up disability services and the loose regulation of the adult guardianship industry as evidence of a systemic issue. "Ableism is a closed loop of a system," she stated, warning that if individuals speak out, they risk being disarmed and having their assets and children taken, as disability can be used to label someone an "unfit parent." Advocates emphasize the urgency of paying attention to disability rights, stating that what affects the disabled community today could impact a broader population tomorrow.
