Ottawa Encampment Crisis: Councillor Demands Action as Eviction Looms
A new homeless encampment has sprung up in Ottawa's ByWard Market, causing concern for local residents and officials. Councillor Stéphanie Plante has called on the city and the Salvation Army to develop long-term strategies to address the situation. "They've been there, I believe, since Wednesday last week, and the encampment has grown," said Plante. The encampment, composed of several tents, is situated near The Salvation Army building. While the encampment is scheduled for dismantling on Friday, Plante worries about the lack of adequate housing options for those affected. The Salvation Army has responded, saying their outreach team is in daily contact with those sheltering in tents, providing support, services, and connections to housing where possible. This situation unfolds as groups rally at City Hall against a provincial bill targeting encampments and public drug use. The events highlight the ongoing challenges of homelessness and the need for comprehensive solutions in Ottawa.
