Vigila el pañal: esta práctica de enfermería es común y es un grave error

Madrid, Spain – A recent viral video from nurse specialist 'Cura con Evidencia' is shedding light on a harmful practice in patient care: the use of 'double diapers.' The healthcare professional, known for her evidence-based advice, warns that this seemingly innocuous method, sometimes employed to increase absorbency or reduce changes, is a significant error with severe consequences for patients, particularly in geriatric care. According to the nurse, using two absorbent products simultaneously drastically increases the risk of infections. The layering elevates temperature and humidity in the diaper area, creating an ideal environment for microbial growth. Furthermore, it causes considerable discomfort for the patient due to increased bulk and heat, potentially leading them to attempt to remove or manipulate the diapers. Counterintuitively, double diapering also increases the likelihood of urine leakage, as the added bulk can prevent a proper fit, and cuts made to the inner diaper to allow urine to pass to the second one impair the absorbents' intended function. Prolonged contact with urine, exacerbated by the reduced breathability and altered pH, significantly elevates the risk of skin lesions and irritation. Finally, the nurse highlights the danger of friction injuries during diaper changes, as removing multiple layers can cause skin tears. The video concludes with a strong call to action, urging healthcare providers and caregivers to abandon this 'erroneous practice' to ensure patient well-being and prevent unnecessary healthcare costs.
