Guatemala's World Cup Hopes Dented by Suriname Draw, Samayoa Expresses Disappointment Following a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Suriname in a crucial World Cup Qualifier match, Guatemalan national team player Nico Samayoa shared his candid thoughts on the outcome. The result, which saw Guatemala concede a late equalizer, left a "very bitter" taste for the team, according to Samayoa. "We had three points in our hands, and we would have been in first place," Samayoa stated, reflecting on the missed opportunity. "It's hard to accept this result because we had the win." Samayoa acknowledged the strength of their opponents, noting, "They are a very good team, with players all playing in the first division of Holland." Despite this, he felt Guatemala delivered a "nearly perfect" performance for much of the game. "We were very solid for many moments. We had our chance, we took it, and then a lapse in concentration cost us," he explained. The player highlighted the challenging nature of World Cup qualifiers, describing them as "very close matches." He emphasized the team's ability to manage the game, even with the home crowd's impetus. "It's normal for the home team to come out with everything, but we knew how to handle it," Samayoa added. The draw means Guatemala now faces a tougher path in the qualifiers, with Samayoa lamenting, "Now we're back in the fight."
