Málaga Residents Stage Protest Against Wastewater Plant Construction
Residents of Vega Mestanza, a region near Málaga known for its ecological citrus groves, staged a protest on June 3, 2025, against the planned construction of the Málaga Norte wastewater treatment plant. Approximately 50 protestors, joined by volunteers from other cities including Sevilla and Marbella, gathered to block access to the construction site. They removed a temporary bridge over the Guadalhorce River and used stones to barricade the path leading to the citrus orchards. "We are here to stop the destruction of our land and the felling of trees," stated Mari Carmen Mestanza, a spokesperson for the affected landowners. The Guardia Civil monitored the peaceful protest to ensure public order. The protest highlights the ongoing tension between development projects and environmental concerns in the region.
