QUITO, Ecuador – Pet owners often wonder about their furry companions' nocturnal movements, interpreting barks, whines, or twitching paws as signs of distress or nightmares. However, Dr. David Aldás, a veterinarian, clarifies that these behaviors are typically a normal and healthy part of a dog's sleep cycle.According to Dr. Aldás, these actions occur during the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) stage of sleep, a period of deep rest where dogs are actively dreaming. "Scientifically, it has been shown that they are dreaming about a beautiful moment, that they played in the park, that they played with their best friend, experiences they have had," he explains in a recent video. This means your dog is likely reliving happy memories, rather than experiencing fear or anxiety.Dr. Aldás advises against waking a dog during these moments, as it can disrupt their natural sleep patterns. He notes one significant exception: "There is an exception when dogs have been rescued and have been abused, used for fighting. There, they are probably nightmares." In such cases, the sleep disturbances might indeed be linked to past trauma. For dogs without a history of abuse, allowing them to sleep undisturbed is crucial for their well-being. This expert insight aims to reassure pet owners and promote a better understanding of canine sleep behavior.
