Retirar las cutículas puede dejar tus uñas más vulnerables de lo que imaginas
Podiatrist Dr. Alfredo Soriano recently appeared on the 'Están Contigo' program to shed light on a common, yet often overlooked, health risk associated with pedicures: the removal of cuticles. Dr. Soriano, known as 'the TikTok podiatrist,' emphasized that the cuticle is a vital anatomical part of the nail, acting as a protective seal against external bacteria and fungi. During his segment, Dr. Soriano used a detailed foot model to illustrate how cutting or removing the cuticle creates an open pathway for pathogens to enter the nail matrix, the area where the nail grows. "If this is removed, cut, or taken out with scissors, all bacteria will enter the back part of the nail, where it grows, to the matrix," he explained. He presented a compelling case of a young female patient who developed a severe fungal infection after undergoing a pedicure where her cuticles were improperly removed. The images displayed showed significant nail damage, which, after a comprehensive treatment, resulted in healthy, pink nails. Dr. Soriano stressed that while nail growth takes several months, such conditions are treatable. "People who see their nails with fungi have a solution," he affirmed, encouraging individuals with discolored, thickened, or otherwise dubious-looking nails to consult a podiatrist.
