New Research Links Microplastics in Arteries to Increased Cardiovascular Risk A recent study published in The New England Journal of Medicine has revealed a concerning correlation between the presence of microplastics and nanoplastics in human arteries and adverse cardiovascular events. Dr. Sethi, a Harvard and Stanford-trained physician, highlighted the study's findings in a recent public address. The research involved 200 individuals undergoing heart surgery. Analysis of their main arteries showed that nearly 60% contained microplastics or nanoplastics. Notably, those with plastic particles in their arteries were found to be 4.5 times more likely to experience heart attacks, strokes, or death compared to individuals without such particles. The study identified polyethylene, a common plastic used in everyday items like plastic bags and water bottles, as the prevalent type of plastic found. While Dr. Sethi emphasized that the study demonstrates a correlation and does not conclusively prove that microplastics directly cause poor health outcomes, he noted that these initial findings are concerning. In light of this research, Dr. Sethi shared his personal decision to minimize his use of plastic water bottles, opting instead for a stainless steel alternative. The findings underscore the growing scientific interest in the potential health impacts of microplastic exposure.
