A recent surge in sleep apnea cases has prompted a UK-based GP, Dr. Ahmed, to raise awareness about this often-undiagnosed condition. Sleep apnea, characterized by pauses in breathing during sleep, can lead to serious health problems. "The number of people I've seen in the last four weeks asking if they have this medical condition has been absolutely crazy," Dr. Ahmed stated in his video. Symptoms include loud snoring, gasping for air, and daytime sleepiness. Left untreated, it can increase the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Ahmed warns against solely using the Epworth Sleepiness Scale for diagnosis, as it only assesses sleepiness, not sleep apnea itself. He emphasizes the importance of seeking professional medical evaluation and referral for a sleep study for proper diagnosis and treatment, which often involves CPAP therapy.
