An approved driving instructor and electric vehicle owner, known as 'drivewithchloe', recently shared crucial insights into EV ownership that new buyers might overlook. In a video uploaded on June 26, 2025, the instructor detailed several 'things I wish I knew before I bought my EV'. One key point addressed was the discrepancy between advertised charging speeds and actual performance. While charging stations may display capacities up to 300 kW, the instructor explained that individual car manufacturers set a cap on how fast a vehicle can accept a charge. Furthermore, once an EV's battery reaches 80% capacity, the charging speed significantly slows down to protect the battery's longevity. She also advised EV owners to primarily utilize only 80% of their battery's capacity to extend its lifespan, suggesting that advertised ranges (e.g., 280 miles) should realistically be considered closer to 80% of that figure in daily use. Regarding charging infrastructure, the instructor highlighted the substantial cost of installing home charging units, which can reach up to £1,000. Public charging stations, while necessary, were also noted as being 'quite pricey'. Despite these challenges, the instructor concluded on a positive note, stating that by driving carefully, EV owners can often achieve a greater range than what is officially advertised for their vehicles.
