A viral TikTok skincare trend known as "oil gritting" has been debunked by Dr. Jenny Liu, a board-certified dermatologist. The trend involves rubbing oil on the face for several minutes, with users claiming to extract sebaceous filaments and blackheads in the form of small, gritty particles. Dr. Liu clarified that these particles are not actually sebaceous filaments or blackheads, but rather clumps of dead skin cells and accumulated debris that can be dislodged by extended rubbing with any cleanser. She emphasized that oil gritting does not effectively penetrate the skin deeply enough to remove true sebaceous filaments or blackheads. Furthermore, Dr. Liu cautioned against using cooking oils like olive or coconut oil, which some TikTok users advocate, as these can be comedogenic and lead to clogged pores. Instead, she recommends proven dermatological methods for pore care, including specialized cleansing oils, beta hydroxy acid (BHA) such as salicylic acid, or topical retinoids. These ingredients are designed to exfoliate and unclog pores more effectively and safely.
