Seville, Spain - Dr. Miguel Saldaña, a renowned plastic surgeon with over three decades of experience, has issued a stark warning regarding a growing cosmetic trend: the intentional fracture of floating ribs. The procedure, aimed at achieving a more defined waistline, is gaining popularity but poses significant health risks, according to the Seville-based surgeon. Dr. Saldaña explained the surgical process, stating, "It involves a small incision of two or three millimeters, through which a piezotome is introduced." He further clarified that the piezotome, a medical device typically used for precise bone cutting in procedures like rhinoplasty, is then utilized to sever the floating ribs. While acknowledging the technical simplicity of the intervention, Dr. Saldaña stressed the extreme danger involved. "It is an intervention technically easy, but of very high risk," he warned. The primary concern lies in the close proximity of vital organs to the floating ribs, making any surgical manipulation in the area potentially life-threatening. Experts caution that such procedures can lead to complications including organ damage, severe pain, infection, and long-term disability. Public health officials are urged to raise awareness about the severe consequences of elective surgeries performed solely for aesthetic purposes without proper medical justification.
