PSOE Member Denies Seeking Compromising Information in UCO Investigation
Leire Díez, a journalist and former member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE), held a press conference in Madrid on June 4, 2025, to address allegations that she sought compromising information on members of the UCO (Unidad Central Operativa), a specialized police unit within the Spanish National Police, who are investigating cases linked to the government. Díez vehemently denied these allegations, stating, "I acted neither on behalf of anyone nor in representation of anyone." She further rejected claims that she is a PSOE informant or a 'coward,' emphasizing her role as a journalist and her right to conduct independent investigations. "Se puede ser socialista y realizar un trabajo de investigación como es el caso del trabajo que llevo desde hace años," she declared, which translates to, "One can be a socialist and carry out investigative work, as is the case with the work I've been doing for years." Following the controversy, Díez resigned from the PSOE. The press conference underscores the ongoing scrutiny of the government's relationship with investigative bodies and highlights the complexities of navigating political affiliations while engaging in journalistic work. This event serves as a reminder of the importance of transparency and accountability in government and the media's role in holding those in power to account.
