Cochabamba Poultry Farmers Face Crisis Amid Blockades
Cochabamba, Bolivia is facing a crisis in its poultry industry due to ongoing blockades affecting the supply of essential feed. The blockades, primarily impacting the transportation of corn and soy from Santa Cruz, have significantly impacted poultry production, according to Iván Carrión, vice president of the Asociación de Avicultores de Cochabamba (ADA).
"We can't get the chickens from many farms in the department to the slaughterhouses because the supplies from Santa Cruz, corn, and soy, aren't arriving, and their cost has skyrocketed," Carrión stated in a recent interview. This shortage has created a critical situation for poultry farmers, particularly small-scale producers who lack the storage capacity of larger operations.
The video shows images of blocked roads, highlighting the logistical challenges faced by farmers in transporting their products. The impact on consumers is also evident, with footage showing market stalls and the reduced availability of chicken. Carrión emphasized the urgency of the situation, noting the significant daily consumption of chicken in La Paz alone.
While the situation is dire, the video also highlights the resilience of the poultry farmers and their determination to overcome these challenges. The hope is that the blockades will be resolved quickly to allow the supply chain to resume normal operations and alleviate the current crisis.
