Dominican Republic Social Security Reform Faces Setback, But Hope Remains
Social Security Law Changes Delayed in Dominican Republic Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic – Proposed amendments to Law 87-03 on Social Security in the Dominican Republic will not be approved in the current legislative session, ending July 26th, according to Chamber of Deputies President Alfredo Pacheco. However, the bicameral commission tasked with reviewing the bill remains committed to its approval this year. "The analysis is just beginning," stated Rafael Castillo, the commission's president and a member of the Fuerza del Pueblo party. "We plan public hearings across the country, which is why it won't pass this session." Deputy Olfany Méndez of the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRM) and a commission member, echoed Castillo's statement, highlighting the importance of modernizing the law. The delay, while disappointing, underscores the need for thorough review and public input before such significant legislation is passed. The commission's commitment to progress suggests a positive outcome is still expected within the year.
