Optometrist Highlights Alarming Link Between Poor Diet and Vision Loss A recent video by optometrist Jesús M. sheds light on the severe consequences of an imbalanced diet on eye health, referencing a concerning case of a 17-year-old who reportedly lost his vision due to nutritional deficiencies. According to the optometrist, the teenager's parents initially sought medical attention for his persistent fatigue. Despite a normal body weight and no visible signs of malnutrition, further examinations revealed a critical lack of essential nutrients. Over the course of a year, the young man developed both hearing loss and severe visual impairment. Dr. Andrew G. Blanton, an ophthalmologist at the Blanton Eye Institute, confirmed that the boy's condition was attributed to "inanition" or "death by starvation" of the retina, caused by years of consuming an exclusive diet of processed foods, including fries, white bread, and processed pork. This case underscores that vision can be compromised not only by what an individual consumes but also by the vital nutrients they fail to include in their diet. Medical professionals have long recognized the profound impact of nutrition on overall bodily health, including ocular well-being. The optometrist stressed the importance of a diverse and nutrient-rich diet for maintaining healthy vision. He specifically recommended incorporating leafy green vegetables, citrus fruits, nuts, blue fish, and orange-colored fruits and vegetables into daily meals to safeguard eye health.
