Guatemalan Teachers Expand Protest in Historic Center, Disrupting Traffic Teachers in Guatemala City have expanded their ongoing protest, significantly disrupting traffic in the Historic Center. The demonstration, led by the STEG (Sindicato de Trabajadores de la Educación de Guatemala) union, has been ongoing for several weeks. The increased presence of teachers today has resulted in road closures around the National Palace. "From early Monday morning, we've seen a much larger number of teachers compared to previous days," said a witness. The protest has caused extensive traffic congestion, prompting authorities to issue advisories urging drivers to utilize alternate routes. Amilcar Montejo, Intendant of the Municipal Transit Police (PMT), reported that several key intersections are blocked due to the protest. These include the areas around 8th Avenue and 6th Street, 7th Avenue and 9th Street, and 6th Avenue and 5th Street. He suggested alternative routes, such as areas near Avenida Elena, Bulevar Las Naciones, and 1st Street between zones 1 and 2. The STEG union has been protesting for improved working conditions and increased pay for teachers. The expansion of the protest suggests a heightened level of urgency and determination in their demands.
