Car Swallowed by Sudden Sinkhole in Singapore; Migrant Workers Hailed as Heroes in Daring Rescue

Singapore, July 26, 2025 – A dramatic incident unfolded on a public road in Katong, Singapore, this past Saturday when an enormous sinkhole, estimated to be 3 meters deep, suddenly opened up, swallowing a black car with its female driver inside. The event, captured on video, occurred around 5:50 PM. Quick-thinking action by seven migrant workers prevented a potential tragedy. Utilizing a rope, they bravely descended into the sinkhole and successfully rescued the woman, who was conscious and subsequently transported to Raffles Hospital, where her condition is reported as stable. Investigations revealed that the sinkhole formed adjacent to an active construction site managed by the National Water Agency. Workers at the site were excavating a 16-meter deep pit for the installation of new sewer lines. According to the Public Utilities Board (PUB), the collapse was linked to the failure of a structural component known as a casing ring, designed to prevent soil and water ingress during excavation. The heroic efforts of the rescue workers have been widely recognized. They were awarded official medals for their bravery and received an invitation to a presidential event. Additionally, a fundraising campaign was launched in their honor, successfully gathering over 72,000 Singaporean dollars.
