Guatemala City Faces Flood Risk: Emetra Monitors Key Underpasses Amidst Heavy Rains

Guatemala City is currently experiencing significant disruption due to the impact of Easterly Wave number 32, which has brought intense atmospheric activity and heavy rainfall throughout Friday. The Municipal Transit Police (Emetra) has declared a yellow alert, anticipating potential traffic complications caused by the persistent downpours. Héctor Flores, General Coordinator of Plan AVE and Director of Emetra, confirmed that the agency is actively monitoring two specific underpasses identified as having the highest risk of flooding. These include the underpass on 13th Street over Aguilar Batres and the one near Cejusa in Zone 11. Emetra's protocols are at a maximum alert level, involving continuous monitoring of high-risk underpasses, deployment of units from the ASISVIAL program, and constant supervision of critical areas. Authorities have issued several recommendations for motorists to ensure safety on the roads. Drivers are advised to keep their headlights on, reduce speed, and maintain increased distance between vehicles. Additionally, checking the condition of windshield wipers and defoggers is crucial for visibility. Motorists are strongly urged to avoid crossing flooded areas to prevent vehicles from becoming stranded.
