Guatemala is currently experiencing a period of intense rainfall across much of its territory, driven by an "onda del este" (eastern wave) that is projected to continue until Friday, October 3rd. The national meteorological institute, INSIVUMEH, has issued warnings regarding the persistent weather conditions. According to INSIVUMEH, significant rainfall, accompanied by electrical activity, is anticipated in several key regions. These include the Pacific, Northern, Caribbean, and the Northern Transverse Strip areas. Residents in the Central Plateau and Eastern Valleys can also expect scattered showers, primarily occurring during the afternoon and evening hours. Morning mist and a warm, humid environment are also forecasted for these areas throughout the day. The scientific entity's meteorological analysis further indicates potential hydrological impacts. The forecasted rains could lead to increased water levels in rivers and trigger lahars along the volcanic chain, posing risks to communities situated near these natural features. The current rainy season has already resulted in a series of adverse events across the nation. Reports indicate numerous incidents, including widespread floods, destructive landslides, and significant mudflows. These events have collectively impacted a substantial portion of the population, with official figures stating that 33,934 individuals have been affected. The departments of Alta Verapaz, Guatemala, and Suchitepéquez have been identified as the most severely impacted areas, experiencing the highest number of weather-related incidents. Emergency services remain on alert to respond to further developments.
