Guatemala City, Guatemala – A significant landslide at kilometer 24 on the Ruta a El Salvador has led to a complete closure of the vital transportation artery for more than 24 hours, causing considerable disruption. President Bernardo Arévalo addressed the nation on Tuesday, October 7, stating that preliminary investigations indicate the landslide is directly linked to unauthorized construction work on a nearby hill. During a press conference held at the CONRED headquarters, President Arévalo explained, "What we are seeing in this place is the effect of work on a hill that, as far as we understand and according to information from the local municipality, was being carried out without the corresponding licenses." He further noted that there was no study on the potential impact of such civil work on the hill, particularly concerning heavy rainfall. Emergency teams, including municipal and departmental institutions, have been working tirelessly since yesterday to clear the massive amount of material covering all four lanes of the road. However, efforts were temporarily suspended today following a secondary landslide, highlighting the precarious nature of the terrain. The president reiterated the government's commitment to restoring transit and ensuring public safety, while also emphasizing the importance of adhering to construction regulations to prevent future disasters.
