Madrid, Spain - The Directorate-General for Traffic (DGT) is considering a new mandatory training course for individuals holding a B type driving license who wish to operate 125cc motorcycles. This potential regulatory change comes in response to a reported increase in accident rates involving these vehicles. Currently, drivers with a B license that has been valid for over three years are permitted to drive motorcycles up to 125cc without additional training. However, the DGT's new proposal aims to introduce a specific formative course to enhance safety and reduce incidents. While the exact structure of the course is yet to be finalized, it is speculated that it could follow the French model, which involves a seven-hour training program. Furthermore, there may be an exemption for experienced riders: those who can demonstrate a minimum of five years of driving experience with a 125cc motorcycle prior to the implementation of the new regulation might be exempt from the course. The DGT has not yet announced a definitive timeline for the implementation of this new requirement, but the discussions highlight a proactive approach to improving road safety for motorcyclists.
