Madrid, Spain - The Spanish Ministry of Labor, under the leadership of Minister Yolanda Díaz, has announced a series of significant labor reforms aimed at improving workers' rights and conditions. These proposals include a new increase in the Minimum Interprofessional Wage (SMI), an extension of parental leave, and the long-awaited 'Statute of the Intern.' Minister Díaz indicated that while the new minimum wage increase has been promised, it is not expected to come into effect until February or March of 2026, following the established timeline for such adjustments. The previous increase was implemented in February 2025. Another key proposal involves the extension of maternity and paternity leave. Currently set at 16 weeks, the new measure would see these permits extended to 19 weeks. This change is scheduled for a crucial vote in the Congress on September 9th. Should the Congress fail to approve it, the proposed extension will not proceed. Finally, the Ministry is once again pushing for the implementation of the 'Statute of the Intern.' This regulation has been a recurring promise over several years but has yet to be formalized. Its revival signals a renewed effort to address the rights and working conditions of interns across the country. The announcements have sparked considerable debate among the public and various stakeholders, with many questioning the feasibility and timeline of these ambitious reforms.
