London, UK As the festive season approaches, a prominent online child safety advocate, known as "The Enchanted Nanny," has issued a critical warning to parents and caregivers regarding common choking hazards for children under the age of six. In a recent viral video, the nanny detailed several popular party foods that she advises against giving to young children, emphasizing the unique risks each poses. "We are getting into festive season, and I always like to do a little post about the things I don't feed to my children because they are a choking hazard," the Enchanted Nanny stated. She highlighted that children often spend more time away from home or at parties during this period, increasing their exposure to various foods. Among the top offenders, popcorn was singled out. "Popcorn is light as a feather, which means that if you were to have some in your mouth and sharply inhale, which children tend to do because they tend to be running around or moving or laughing, that's gonna go down into the airway," she explained. She added that even the irritation from a kernel shell can cause swelling, risking airway blockage. Marshmallows, even the tiny ones, were also identified as highly dangerous. "They're very sticky," she noted, "if they get lodged in the airway, they're not going to move. It's going to be really, extremely difficult to get that out because they're light and they're sticky and they are the size of an airway." Grapes, cherry tomatoes, and larger blueberries were another concern. The nanny stressed the importance of cutting these foods lengthwise, as a whole grape is "the absolute perfect size of a child's airway." Similarly, small, spherical cocktail sausages were flagged due to their inner skin and tendency to compact into a hardened ball in a child's mouth. Finally, spherical lollipops were deemed a significant risk. "They're that sphere-shaped, they're not gonna break down," she warned. She also pointed out that many lollipop sticks are made of cardboard, which can weaken when wet, causing the candy to detach and become a choking hazard. The Enchanted Nanny urged parents to be vigilant, especially during holiday gatherings, and to ensure children are seated and undistracted while eating. Her advice aims to prevent tragic accidents by raising awareness about these often-overlooked dangers.
