Parenting expert Camilla Every Day, known for her practical advice, has shared what she calls her 'best parenting tip' for fostering cooperation in young children. In a recent online video, Camilla, who boasts a decade of experience as a nanny and is a mother of two, advocates for a communication style that treats children as equals rather than subordinates. 'Nobody likes being told what to do like it’s an order,' Camilla states in her video. 'People like being colluded with. They like feeling like equals.' She suggests parents approach tasks by 'gossiping' with their children or sharing a 'crazy secret,' making the child feel like a trusted confidant. She demonstrates this technique with an example of cleaning the living room. Instead of issuing a command, she role-plays, saying, 'Come here. Oh my god, this is so annoying, but... we’ve got to clean up this living room. It sucks. I don’t want to clean up. I want to go outside and play.' She then transitions to a collaborative tone: 'Okay, listen, we’re going to clean up together. Let’s do it. Let’s see if we can do it really quickly. And then, when we’ve cleaned up, let’s get some juice and go and sit on the porch.' According to Camilla, this approach transforms a chore into a shared mission, fostering a sense of teamwork and mutual respect. 'They just want to be your buddy. They just want to be your confidant. They just want to be your best friend,' she explains. 'And if you talk to them like that, they’re like, yeah, we’re a team. Let’s do this together.' This method aims to reduce resistance and encourage children to willingly participate in tasks.
