EU Unveils 18th Sanctions Package Against Russia, Targeting Oil Prices
The European Union presented its 18th sanctions package against Russia on June 10, 2025. The main goal is to further weaken the Russian economy by lowering the price cap on Russian oil. Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, stated, "We are increasing the pressure on Russia, because strength is the only language Russia understands." The package includes measures against Russia's shadow fleet, its banking sector, and further export bans on various goods. However, Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda criticized the slow implementation of previous sanctions, raising concerns about the credibility of EU actions. The EU's commitment to supporting Ukraine remains a central theme. This new package demonstrates the ongoing efforts to counter Russia's actions and bolster Ukraine's resilience.
