Peruvian Teachers to Stage Massive Protest for Pension Reform
Peruvian Teachers Union to Protest for Pension Increase Lima, Peru – The Sindicato Único de Trabajadores de la Educación del Perú (SUTEP), Peru's largest teachers' union, announced a major protest outside the country's Congress on June 5th. The demonstration aims to pressure lawmakers to approve a bill that would significantly increase minimum pensions for retired teachers. The current minimum pension is far below a living wage, leaving many former educators in dire financial straits. Lucio Castro, the SUTEP's general secretary, stated in an interview, "At 3 pm this Thursday, the mobilization is called. We are going to the Congress of the Republic because today a long-awaited bill will be discussed, and we are convinced that it will begin the recognition of all retirees and pensioners." He emphasized the union's demand for a minimum pension of 3300 soles, a substantial increase from the current amount. The protest is expected to draw a large number of participants, highlighting the widespread dissatisfaction among retired teachers with their current pension levels. The union hopes that this demonstration will put pressure on the government to prioritize their cause and improve the financial security of these educators who have dedicated their lives to the nation's youth.
