Seville, Spain – Dr. Fernando Fabiani, a family physician, recently shared crucial first aid guidelines for responding to faints and lipothymia, aiming to correct common misconceptions and ensure proper care. Dr. Fabiani emphasized that the immediate instinct to help a person who has fainted by making them stand up is incorrect and potentially harmful. "If I lift them, they will fall back down again," he stated, explaining that the body's natural response to a faint is to lie down to facilitate blood flow to vital organs. According to Dr. Fabiani, the most effective first step is to leave the person lying on the ground. He advises, "Lift their legs slightly." This position helps blood return to the heart and brain, aiding in recovery. He also cautioned against a common practice: giving candy or liquids to someone who is not fully conscious. "Be careful, because a person who is a bit dazed, with a low level of consciousness, risks choking," he warned. The doctor recommended waiting three to five minutes while the person remains lying down. Once they feel better, they should sit on the ground for another few minutes, and only then attempt to stand up if they still feel well.
