World Mourns Renowned Photographer Sebastião Salgado
Renowned Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado passed away in Paris this Friday at the age of 81. The news was confirmed by André Fontenelle, a reporter for Folha de S.Paulo, who was in Paris at the time. Fontenelle stated, "Paris was surprised this afternoon by the news of the death of the Brazilian photographer Sebastião Salgado." Salgado's death was attributed to leukemia, stemming from a malaria infection contracted during a trip to Indonesia in 2010. This is a significant loss for the art world; Salgado was a member of the Académie des Beaux-Arts and a highly respected figure in France. Ironically, Salgado was scheduled to attend the vernissage of his son Rodrigo's art exhibition this Saturday. Rodrigo, who has Down syndrome, is also an artist, and his artwork was used to create stained-glass windows installed in a church near Reims. Fontenelle's interview with Salgado last month revealed that Salgado was undergoing treatment and feeling less energetic than usual. The unexpected nature of Salgado's passing, coupled with his influential career, makes this a story of both profound sadness and lasting legacy.
