Alligator Alcatraz: Florida's New Everglades Detention Center for Migrants Set to Open
Florida is preparing to open a new migrant detention center in the Everglades, unofficially dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz," next month. The facility, a repurposed abandoned airport, spans 39 square miles and features a 10,500-foot runway. It is designed to accommodate up to 1,000 migrants from Florida and other U.S. states. The unique location, surrounded by the natural environment of the Everglades, is highlighted as a significant deterrent to escape. Florida's Attorney General has issued a warning to those who might consider attempting to flee, citing the presence of alligators and pythons in the surrounding marshlands. Officials state that the facility could be operational within 30 to 60 days after construction begins, presenting a low-cost opportunity for a temporary detention center. The remote and naturally fortified environment is expected to minimize the need for extensive perimeter security.
