Quiet Start to 2025 Hurricane Season: Experts Explain Why
The 2025 Eastern Pacific hurricane season officially began on May 15th, but forecasters are reporting an unusually quiet start. FOX Weather hurricane specialist Bryan Norcross explained that this is due to a combination of factors, including strong upper-level winds and a significant amount of Saharan dust. "There's a big plume of dust," Norcross said, "and this is usually there at least through July." He noted that this dust suppresses storm development. While no tropical development is expected in the next seven days, Norcross identified areas in the Caribbean and Central America as potential future development zones to watch. The unusually quiet start contrasts with last year's more active season, highlighting the ever-changing nature of hurricane forecasting.
