Dramatic Rescue in San Francisco Bay: Captain's Resolve Saves Historic Sailboat
San Francisco Bay Rescue: Eight Saved, Captain's Resolve Saves Historic Sailboat On Saturday, May 28th, 2025, strong winds whipped through San Francisco Bay, causing a 100-year-old wooden sailboat to capsize. Nine adults were on board during the incident. The San Francisco Fire Department and the U.S. Coast Guard swiftly responded to a 911 call reporting a boat in distress. Lieutenant Mariano Elias of the San Francisco Fire Department stated, "Once our fire boats and jet skis arrived, they witnessed a sailboat with its mast and sail down, and nine people were aboard." He further explained that the crew was able to rescue eight people quickly and efficiently. Remarkably, the captain of the vessel, an experienced boater and master instructor, refused to abandon his historic boat, opting instead to wait for a tow. Lieutenant Elias noted, "He wasn't going down without a fight." This decision added an unexpected layer to the rescue operation. Despite the challenging conditions, all nine individuals were brought to safety. The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety precautions while boating and the dedication of rescue personnel.
