Tampa Hospital's 15-Foot Flood Wall: A Hurricane-Proof Solution?
Tampa General Hospital's innovative approach to hurricane preparedness has become a model for other cities facing similar challenges. The hospital utilizes Aquafence, a temporary flood barrier capable of withstanding up to 15 feet of water. Dustin Pasteur, SVP of Facilities and Construction, stated, "When we encountered the Aquafence product about five years ago, we realized that we could take our risk from six or eight feet above sea level to fifteen feet." The system, made of lightweight composite wood, is easily deployed and stored, offering a significant upgrade from traditional sandbags. The hospital's proactive strategy, which includes the Aquafence, backup emergency power, and additional flood-proofing measures, ensures continued operation during severe storms. This approach demonstrates a commitment to community safety and serves as an example for other institutions and municipalities.
