Double Trouble in the Pacific: Two Tropical Storms Threaten Mexico
Eastern Pacific Hurricane Season Begins Early: Tropical Storms Barbara and Cosme Form The Eastern Pacific hurricane season has started earlier than usual, with the formation of two tropical storms: Barbara and Cosme. As of June 9th, 2025, Tropical Storm Barbara, located off Mexico's southern coast, is expected to intensify into a hurricane later in the day. According to meteorologist Britta Merwin of FOX Weather, "Barbara is expected to become the first hurricane of the East Pac season." While Barbara's projected path is expected to largely miss land, significant surf is expected along the Mexican coast. Meanwhile, Tropical Storm Cosme is also developing, with a 50% chance of further intensification. The cooler water temperatures are likely to limit the longevity of both storms. The early arrival of these storms is noteworthy, as the average date for the first named tropical system in the East Pacific is June 10th and the first hurricane is June 26th. This underscores the unusual activity in the region this year. Despite the early start, the overall impact on land is predicted to be minimal, offering a degree of relief.
