Geologists Say a New Hole Has Appeared in Yellowstone National Park
A new hole was discovered in Yellowstone National Park in April 2025, when geologists performed routine maintenance at the Norris Geyser Basin.
Yellowstone National Park, USA - Geologists conducting routine temperature checks at Yellowstone National Park's Norris Geyser Basin have announced the discovery of a new blue water spring. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) indicates that this newly formed pool is likely the result of a series of minor hydrothermal explosions that commenced around last Christmas. The discovery was made during ongoing monitoring of the park's dynamic geothermal features. Satellite imagery, presented by FOX Weather, illustrates the evolution of the landscape in the affected area. Images from October 19, 2024, show the terrain before the spring's appearance, while subsequent images from January 6, 2025, and February 13, 2025, reveal the progressive formation of the distinctive blue pool, particularly noticeable amidst the winter snow cover. Yellowstone is renowned for its geothermal activity, including geysers, hot springs, and mudpots, which are constantly changing. This new spring underscores the ongoing geological processes beneath the park's surface.
