Mulhouse, France – A unique intergenerational initiative is bridging the gap between generations in Mulhouse, offering a novel solution to both student housing challenges and senior isolation. The Domytis senior residence is providing a fully equipped 35-square-meter studio apartment to a student, free of charge, in exchange for 15 hours of weekly engagement with its residents. Madeleine Heitz, the residence director, explained that the program seeks a student who is comfortable interacting with seniors and can propose various activities. "Someone who is very knowledgeable in IT could offer computer workshops to the residents," she suggested. The primary objective is to foster intergenerational social connections. Residents of the Domytis residence eagerly await the arrival of their new, younger neighbor. Elianne Noël, 76, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, "We'll have different conversations; it's refreshing." The student will not only benefit from free accommodation but also gain access to the residence's amenities, including a swimming pool and a gym. Crucially, the arrangement is formalized through a legitimate contract that includes contributions to unemployment and retirement funds, providing the student with valuable professional experience and social security benefits. This initiative presents a mutually beneficial model, addressing critical societal needs while enriching the daily lives of both students and seniors.
