Street Vendor Loses Leg After Shooting by Police Officer in Fernando de Noronha

Fernando de Noronha street vendor Emmanuel Apory’s leg was amputated following a shooting incident on May 5th. The shooting occurred after an argument with police officer Luiz Alberto Braga at the Forte dos Remédios. Apory, in a video statement, claims the delayed transfer to the mainland exacerbated his injuries. "If I had arrived on the mainland sooner, maybe it would have been different, and I wouldn't need an amputation," he stated, highlighting the inadequate healthcare facilities on the island. He denies allegations of harassing the officer’s girlfriend, the purported cause of the conflict. The incident has sparked calls for improved healthcare infrastructure on Fernando de Noronha.
