Elderly Woman Assaulted by Homeless Individuals in Niterói, Brazil; Police and City Officials Unresponsive Niterói, RJ, Brazil - May 28, 2025 - A 79-year-old woman, Maria Carolina de Almeida Pinto, was assaulted by two homeless individuals in the Fonseca neighborhood of Niterói on Sunday, May 25, 2025. The incident occurred as she was exiting a bus. According to witnesses, she was caught in the middle of a fight between the two individuals and was pushed to the ground, sustaining injuries. Ms. Pinto was transported to Azevedo Lima Hospital for treatment. She underwent examinations and was subsequently released. A relative of Ms. Pinto stated, "Two homeless people were fighting, and they threw her on the asphalt. She was hurt and is being treated at Azevedo Lima Hospital." Despite the severity of the incident, authorities have yet to respond. Both the Military Police and the Civil Police, as well as the Niterói City Hall, stated that they were not contacted regarding the assault. This lack of response raises concerns about the safety and well-being of elderly residents in the area and the effectiveness of local emergency services.
