Rio Relaxes Controversial Beach Kiosk Rules
Rio's Beach Kiosk Rules Relaxed After Public Outcry Rio de Janeiro, Brazil – New regulations governing the city's iconic beach kiosks went into effect on June 1st, 2025, following weeks of public debate and revisions. The initial decree, deemed too restrictive by many, sparked protests and prompted the city to soften its stance. "The goal is to make our beaches democratic and accessible to everyone," stated Mayor Eduardo Paes in a recent press conference. The revised rules allow music at kiosks between noon and 10 PM, under a self-regulation system monitored by Orla Rio, the concessionaire responsible for managing the city's 300+ kiosks. The sale and consumption of alcoholic beverages in glass bottles are also permitted once again. However, penalties for non-compliance remain stringent. First-time offenders face a R$1,000 fine, escalating to R$2,000 for a second violation. A third offense leads to the immediate cancellation of the kiosk's operating license. Orla Rio, along with the municipal guard and the Department of Public Order, will be responsible for enforcement. The relaxed regulations mark a compromise between the city's desire for order and the public's demand for a vibrant beach experience. The coming weeks will show whether this balance can be successfully maintained.
