30 Mayors Protest Renfe's Train Schedule Changes in A Gudiña
A Gudiña, Spain – Thirty mayors from the provinces of Ourense and Zamora in Spain, and northern Portugal, are united in their opposition to Renfe's decision to reduce the frequency of train services to Madrid. The changes, effective June 9th, will severely impact the 260,000 residents of the region. "This is an aberration, a shot in the foot, because they're taking away the trains that really serve us," stated Néstor Ogando Blanco, mayor of A Gudiña. The new schedules make it impossible for many to complete a round trip to Madrid in a single day, causing significant disruption to daily commutes and work schedules. One affected resident commented, "There are people who leave to work in the morning and return in the afternoon, due to the high cost of housing in Madrid." The mayors have drafted a letter to Renfe, highlighting the issue of rural isolation, and are planning a protest for Saturday under the slogan "If the train doesn't stop, we close the door."
