University of A Coruna to Offer Medicine Degree, Addressing Critical Shortage
A Coruña, Spain – In a significant boost to the Galician healthcare system, the University of A Coruña will begin offering a degree in Medicine starting in the 2027-2028 academic year. This decision, announced by Rector Ricardo Cao, aims to address a critical shortage of medical professionals in the region. Currently, the University of Santiago de Compostela is the only public university in Galicia offering the degree, with 403 places annually and over 3000 applications. "With this decision," Cao stated, "we aim to meet the significant demand for this qualification." The move is also in response to the expected retirement of 30% of doctors in the next decade, along with the emergence of new medical specializations. The University of A Coruña's strong academic, research, and technological capabilities, coupled with its proximity to the Complexo Hospitalario Universitario da Coruña, make it an ideal location for the new program. The addition of Medicine to the university's existing health programs, including Nursing, Physiotherapy, and Occupational Therapy, represents a major step forward for healthcare education in Galicia.
