Galicia's Green Revolution: New Plant to Produce Sustainable Textile Fibers
Galician Town to House New Sustainable Textile Plant Palas de Rei, Galicia, will soon be home to a new textile fiber plant, a project spearheaded by the Portuguese multinational Altri. This development promises a significant boost to the region's economy and positions Galicia at the forefront of sustainable textile production in Europe. Concerns had previously been raised regarding the plant's potential impact on the environment and its intended purpose. However, Gabriel Sousa, Altri's Director of Innovation, dispelled these concerns in a recent interview featured in a G24 Noticias report. Sousa stated, "The processes and quality of the products are completely different." He emphasized that the plant's production would be "exclusively directed to the textile sector, never to the production of paper." The plant will utilize eucalyptus wood to produce 250,000 tons of soluble fiber annually, with 190,000 tons destined for textile operators and 60,000 tons for lyocell production within the same facility. This high-tech project underscores Altri's commitment to sustainable practices and its vision for a greener future in the textile industry. This initiative is expected to generate numerous jobs and attract further investment in the region, placing Galicia at the forefront of sustainable textile innovation in Europe. The project is a significant step towards a more environmentally responsible fashion industry.
